The beginning of the industrial development in Apolda dates back to
the 16th century. Already in 1654, the knitwear of Apolda was sold
on the Leipziger Fair. The "Christian Zimmermann" company, founded
in 1789, was very important for the development of this industrial
branch.
The introduction of modern machines, growing industrialization and new industrial branches
made Apolda to the most important industrial town of the Dukedom
Saxony - Weimar at the end of the 19 th century.
In 1722, the first Bell Foundry was built. Apart from 20,000 other bells, the St. Peter´s Bell of the Cologne Cathedral "Decke Pitter" was founded here, in 1923, which had 24 tons of weight. |

Apolda overcame the economy crisis, two wars and the compulsory nationalization
because of the spirit and the abilities of the middle class.
Up to the present, Apolda has kept its reputation as a center of knitwear. The development since 1989/1990 gave new hope
to the working middle class. |
